Self-promo circa. 1990

The Dynamic Duo

Who is entirely comfortable talking about themselves? Politicians aside, not many of us are. I’m certainly not. I’ve designed various personal promo pieces over the years, some more successful than others. The photo above is of a promo that I sent out in the pre-computer era, when I spent most of my time hunched over a drafting table with an analog device in my hand: a mechanical pencil, a marker, an airbrush, an X-acto blade or the ever-popular exploding tech pen.

If I were to re-do it today I might lay it out a bit differently, change the typography and maybe tweak a few words, but the sentiment is the same. The tools have changed somewhat, a pencil and a marker have largely been replaced by a mouse and some pixels, but tools are just that, tools. They still need to be guided by a skilled, experienced hand and backed by a few good ideas to make much of an impact.

I’ve been doing this for awhile now. Not sure I’ve ever changed the world or brought any villains to their knees. I’m not done yet.
